Got the tree this week. Had the lights up last week. Haven't done any baking yet, but hoping to next week when things slow down at work a little. I actually haven't had time to cook anything all week. Cold meals get boring quickly. Don't know what I want to try baking next though. I last did a carrot cake, and I've done lots of pies. I'm wanting to try something different this time.

Any suggestions? What does your mom bake for you Bear?

Usually she makes my 2 favorite holiday cookies which are mincemeat cookies and whipped shortbread!!! yummmm

Plus she will pack 3-4 large tins full of a variety of other baking which could, be butterscotch chip cookies, chocolate roll, butter tart squares, maybe a cherry loaf or two depending on how many she makes. Yeah I get spoiled but I'm not complaining hahahaha It's been a long standing tradition that when she packs a container or 3 of treats, I have to return the empty containers or I won't get anymore. This was started many many years ago and even now, I make sure I return her cookie tins back. Dayum she has me trained well LOL

i can't Win against butterscotch cookies, it can't be done. [:D]
Wow, i didn't know that mincemeat came in cookie form. There's still brandy in them, yes?

That sounds great Fae. I will defenitely try some of that next week. Especially the oranges.

lovethyself -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/14/2012 2:38:52 PM)

Ooooh, I should have finished reading the posts before my last response. Bear, your mom sounds great. I have some research to do for recipies. I have a couple of pot lucks coming up, so it's the perfect time to bake, and not have to eat the whole thing myself. *grins* I nominate Bear's mom for the WIN. Lots of baking, and some training in there too!

A desert i like to take to pot luck dinners is Apple Crisp. You can use canned apple pie filling or sliced fresh apples. Add some cinnamon and nutmeg to the apples. The topping is brown sugar, butter, flour and oatmeal.

i'm getting warm fuzzies thinking the WIN will be found in a cozy kitchen this holiday season.
So i'm going to wish that we all get to feel the zen contentment of pussycats sleeping by the hearth as a Solstice prayer.
Blessed Yuletide, to One and All.[:)]

In the past i've listened to the Paul Winter Solstice concert on NPR on the 21st. Do you get NPR where you are?

Do you celebrate the Winter Solstice with special food or customs?

Bake snickerdoodle cookies, let some go stail (dry out). Use those to make rum balls.
Throw some broken Andes-Candies into a batch of brownies.

Empty a bottle of cheap imitation vanilla extract into a little sauce pot with some water ( 1 part vanilla / 4 parts water ) and just let it simmer. Your house will smell like you've been baking.[;)]
If you've got oranges that don't look okay to eat but aren't really "rotten", slice them up, throw them on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with the cheap cinnamon, and let 'em bake until they're totally spent.
You could use good oranges, but this is something i do so i don't feel like something went to waste.[sm=dunno.gif]

Would that work with peaches, Fae? Though peaches and cinnamon, I don't know about.

The brownie idea sounds yum!

Edited because missing an "L".

lovethyself -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/16/2012 1:02:32 AM)

Fluffy, I've done many fruit crumbles in the past. Love them. And I've used a granola cereal for the topping (like Quaker Harvest Crunch) instead of just oatmeal. It adds a lot of other things into it, without having to go through the hassle of adding them individually.

Fae, if we keep on this topic, the win will defenitely be in a kitchen this season. I plan to bring it with me when I bake next week.

Winter solstice for me has usually been more about the return of light. So, if I am not working and can stay up, I will light a candle at the middle of the night to signify the beginning of daylight's return. Oh, and there is usually a traditional song circle that I try to get to. I don't really have any special foods for it though.

Happy season to all, whatever you celebrate.

If a bonfire isn't an option, we microwave gummibears until they explode.
Chaos and i give gift to each other on the 21st in private. That way, later we are free to share in Christmas fun with friends and family.

Our kitchen radio didn't make it through the move, so i'll get back to you on that matter.

fluffypet67 -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/16/2012 6:51:05 AM)

Finally all caught up on the laundry from the one week vacation.

i WIN!

lovethyself -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/16/2012 11:42:10 AM)

Still need to do that. Been putting it off to work and sleep instead. So you win, for now...

fluffypet67 -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/16/2012 11:56:46 AM)

You are so kind.

lovethyself -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/16/2012 12:31:35 PM)

I try.

fluffypet67 -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/17/2012 11:25:53 AM)

Snack of celery filled with peanut butter. i probably should just eat the celery.

lovethyself -> RE: The Last One to Post, WINs Part II (12/17/2012 2:25:33 PM)

Nope. Peanut butter has protein in it, so it's good.

Expire? Oh gosh no, I hope not. Not today, or anytime soon, I mean. [;)]

If I try peaches, though, will do.

Yes you have, they were just frozen.
